The DeKalb Master Gardener Association is just that — an  association of about 40 Master Gardeners and friends in DeKalb County, Georgia.  The organization was formed to foster more extensive educational, community service, and social events for interested Master Gardeners.

DMGA is classified as a "Master Gardener volunteer organization outside the UGA university structure" and receives no support or public funds through the Cooperative Extension Service.  For information about the DeKalb County Cooperative Extension Service, please visit the following website:

DMGA Meeting -
Monday, October 23, 2017

Speaker: Lisa Bartlett
Smith-Gilbert - The Metamorphosis of a Garden

DeKalb Master Gardener Association's October meeting will feature a presentation by Lisa Bartlett. She is currently the Garden Manager of Smith-Gilbert Gardens.

Smith-Gilbert Gardens is a City of Kennesaw Botanical Garden -- Kennesaw's first botanical garden. It consists of 16 acres surrounding the historic Hiram Butler House (ca. 1880). The property has been redeveloped with an emphasis on unique plantings (over 3,000 species of plants) and thoughtfully positioned sculpture. For background information about Smith-Gilbert Gardens and what Lisa does there, see:
GardenSMART - Bringing a Garden Back into Scale

Lisa is a self-described "plant geek." She is no stranger to DMGA; she was one of our speakers in 2008, giving us a presentation on "Tips & Tricks of the Gardening Trade." One of her past gigs was as a talent agent for stand-up comedians like Jeff Foxworthy.

If you've been to DMGA's last two meetings, it will appear that our fall program track is "Pollinators" (speaker Jennifer Leavy) and "Weeds" (speaker Betsy Abrams). Peek at the BLOG section on the Smith-Gilbert website and you'll find that Lisa has been writing about those topics, too:
"Plant for Pollinators"
"Let's Make Weeds Fashionable Again!"

DMGA meetings begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Northlake / Barbara Loar Branch of the DeKalb County Public Library located at 3772 LaVista Road, Tucker, GA 30084 (inside I-285, corner of Harobi Dr. and LaVista Rd., turn at the BB&T Bank). Click here for a map of the library's location.

Plan to join us for this last meeting of 2017 and bring a friend. There is no charge or pre-registration for this DMGA educational program. We'll also be presenting another set of scholarships to Gwinnett Tech students at this meeting.

DMGA Announces Scholarship Recipients for 2016-2017

At the March 2017 monthly meeting, DeKalb Master Gardener Association awarded a second set of horticulture scholarships for the 2016-2017 academic year.   Scholarship checks of $500 were awarded to these two Gwinnett Technical College students:

Ms. Katherine Angell
Ms. Jill Baker

A continuing scholarship, also in the amount of $500, was awarded to:

Mr. Thomas Kmetz

Under a program created in 2006, DMGA awards scholarships each year to DeKalb County residents attending UGA or Gwinnett Tech. We enjoy the opportunity to promote and encourage horticulture education in this way.

Our congratulations to these deserving students and our best wishes for their future successful careers in horticulture.
