DMGA Meeting - Tuesday, August 31, 2010

The next DeKalb Master Gardener Association monthly meeting will feature a presentation on "Basic Rose Care." The speaker will be fellow Master Gardener Stan Leacock.

Hobbies often become vocations and so it was with Stan Leacock. While working in the hi-tech and defense industries, Stan grew roses of various species and types as a hobby. For the Leacock family, moves were frequent, but they offered Stan experience in growing roses in varied climate regions and soil types. Upon retirement, Stan relocated to Atlanta, became a DeKalb Master Gardener and founded Stan’s Rose Care. Now he plants, transplants and prunes hundreds of roses, installs new rose beds and renovates gardens throughout metro Atlanta. Stan is a member of the American Rose Society and the Greater Atlanta Rose Society.

The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 31, at the Northlake - Barbara Loar Branch of the DeKalb County Public Library at 3772 LaVista Road, Tucker, GA 30084. Click here for a map of the library's location. There is no charge or pre-registration for this educational program.

September 28 DMGA Meeting Will Focus on Herbs

Jessica Groleau, Senior Horticulturist at the Atlanta Botanical Garden, will share “Tips for Growing Herbs … in the Landscape and in Patio Containers” when the DeKalb Master Gardener Association meets on September 28 at 6:30 p.m. at the Northlake Library. Growing herbs in Georgia can be challenging, but rewarding. Join the DMGA to learn growing methods and herb varieties that have proved successful in the Atlanta area.

PLANT SALE RECAP

The 2010 DMGA Spring Plant Sale is history. April 24 truly gave us "April showers," but a little precipitation does not stop gardeners from shopping for plants. Besides, the rain made the "merchandise" look extra lush and green.

We would like to thank members and friends for donating plants from their gardens and for their help in preparing for and staffing the plant sale. Special thanks goes to the many customers who once again supported us in this fund raiser.

DMGA Awards Horticulture Scholarships

The DeKalb Master Gardener Association has awarded two horticulture scholarships for the 2009-2010 school year.

Kate Cassidy, a Senior at The University of Georgia, has received a scholarship for $1000.

Catherine Buckley, a second year student at Gwinnett Technical College and a resident of DeKalb County, has received a scholarship for $500.
